Self-Latching Cards | Wednesday Workshop Series

In this episode of my Wednesday Workshop Series, I created two self-latching cards using the Spellbinders Beautifully Imperfect Paper Pack and Spellbinders Cardstock, using two different methods. All products used in today’s card tutorial project are listed below.

Wednesday Workshop | Sketches and Fun Fold Cards Series

This project is part of my Wednesday Workshop | Sketches and Fun Fold Cards Series. This series used to be published on Saturdays, but I have moved it to Wednesday for some mid-week card inspiration! I have a playlist on YouTube with all the past episodes if you’d like to check them out.

In this series, I find a card sketch on the internet and make a card (or more) using it. If making more than one card, the first one will stick closely to the sketch, while the others will have slight changes or demonstrate different techniques. I have added fun fold cards and one sheet wonders into the mix as well, so we have lots of creative options!

Related Videos:

For the first card, I took inspiration from a Jackie Bolhuis/Klompenstampers “Back Fold Card” video.

For the second card, I took inspiration from a Connie Stewart/Simply Simple Stamping “Back Bend Card” video.

Card #1-Instructions

Cutting the Card Base and Panels

I first cut and scored the Spellbinders Chiffon card base according to the measurements, and then folded and burnished the score lines. The two larger areas fold over like a book to create a small card, and the flap on the right side will bend back, allowing the card latch to open.

Next, I trimmed out some pieces from the Spellbinders Beautifully Imperfect Paper Pack, and then cut the mat layers from Spellbinders Mulberry cardstock. I cut an extra Chiffon mat layer to go behind the bird image to reinforce those layers, and also cut a panel of Spellbinders Classic White cardstock for the inside panel.

Assembling the Card

I attached the floral panel to its Mulberry mat layer, the pink cracked paint strip to its Mulberry mat layer, the bird panel to its pink distressed mat, and then those onto the Chiffon mat. Then, I added the floral panel to the card front, and the skinny strip to the right flap.

Next, I added the bird panel to the right flap only, using Altenew foam tape. This allows you to bend back the flap and the bird panel will lift off the card, allowing it to open. Once that was set, I added the skinny strip to the left side of the White cardstock inside panel, and then used temporary adhesive to add the panel to the inside of the card. I find this is easier for me, so I can remove and replace the panel if I mess up when writing my message without having to tear my card apart.

Card #2-Instructions

Cutting the Card Base and Panels

I first cut and scored the Spellbinders Raven card base according to the measurements, and then folded and burnished the score lines. The two larger areas fold over like a book to create a small card, and this version has two skinny sections on the right side. These will be folded over onto themselves, and then the flap will be able to bend back, allowing the card latch to open.

Next, I trimmed out some pieces from the Spellbinders Beautifully Imperfect Paper Pack, and then cut a mat layer for the front panel from Spellbinders Malibu cardstock. I cut out one of the butterflies from the paper pack using the Simon Says Stamp Basic Shapes Circles Die Set, and then cut out a circle mat from the Malibu cardstock. I also cut a Spellbinders Fairy Tale cardstock panel for the inside, with a mat layer from the Beautifully Imperfect Paper.

Assembling the Card

I attached the grey mixed media-looking panel to its Malibu mat layer, the butterfly circle to its Malibu mat circle layer, and the Fairy Tale panel to the Beautifully Imperfect grey mat layer.

To add some interest to the right skinny flap panel, I used the Studio Light Pretty Butterflies Embossing Folder on the very right-most card base section, added tape runner behind the flap, folded it over, and adhered it to the other skinny panel area. Next, I added the grey panel to the card front and the Fairy Tale panel to the inside of the card. I discovered after creating the first card that it would be easier to add the inside panel before adhering the focal image to the flap area.

Next, I added the butterfly circle panel to the right flap only, using Altenew Black foam tape so it would not show from the side. This allows you to bend back the flap, and the butterfly panel will lift off the card, allowing it to open.

After the card was assembled, I wasn’t happy with the way the circle was laying across the card front. I removed the circle from the flap and added an additional layer of foam tape on top of the existing layer. This helped the circle lay flatter across the card front. I also die cut an additional circle from Malibu cardstock and cut off a small section of it to accommodate the existing foam tape. I glued the semi-circle behind the original circle, which added additional strength to the layers.
