Amazing Neon Alcohol Inks: Create a Vibrant Butterfly Birthday Card!
In this video project, I made my teen daughter a Birthday card using Tim Holtz Neon Alcohol Inks, Tim Holtz Perspective Butterfly die, Clear Sticker Paper, and Acetate. All products used to make this project are listed below.
Measurements
A2 Card Base: 4 1/4 x 5 1/2" when folded (acetate)
8 1/2 x 5 1/2", Scored at 4 1/4"
Additional A2 card base made from Black Glitter Cardstock
1/8" trimmed from long side, and 1/8" trimmed from top or bottom side
Inside White Panel: 3 3/4 x 5"
Holographic Mat: 4 x 5 1/4"
Creating the Neon Alcohol Inked Panel
For this card, I wanted to use the alcohol inks on clear sticker paper so it would give a see-through stained glass effect. I used the Tim Holtz Perspective Butterfly Die as a guide of how far I needed the ink to reach across the paper. I first sprayed isopropyl alcohol onto the paper, then I added the inks from the center of the paper outwards to try and get a somewhat symmetrical look in the inking. I added more isopropyl alcohol and more ink until I was satisfied with the result.
Making the Card Base
I used Simon Says Stamp Acetate for the card base, cutting it with my Tim Holtz Guillotine Trimmer. Next I used my Spellbinders Trimmer to score both sides of the acetate. I used my Scor-buddy and Cricut Scoring tool to deepen the score line in the acetate. Using the ledge of my Scor-buddy, I matched up the edges of my card base and used my bone folder to reinforce the score line. Acetate can be challenging to crease and fold, but using these steps makes it a little easier.
After the inked panel was dry, I ran it through my Sizzix Switch die cutting machine with the Perspective Butterfly die. I added the Sizzix Chrome Precision Base Plate into my die-cutting sandwich to help cut through the sticker paper. One that was completed, I removed the sticker paper backing from the die cut and added it to the front of the card base. Then I wrapped around the rest to the back of the card base. I used a brayer and the Trinity Stamps Ergonomic Tool to smooth out the sticker and help it adhere to the acetate. I love using the clear sticker paper with alcohol inks because you can see through both sides of the image.
I cut another A2 card base out of Erin Lee Creative Black Glitter cardstock, and cut 1/8″ off the right side (when folded), and 1/8″ off the top edge as well, This allows the glitter card to lay nicely inside the acetate card base without sticking out of the sides.
Attaching the Layers
When using an acetate card base, the hardest thing is figuring out how to attach the layers without any adhesive showing through the acetate. For this card, I chose to attach the layers using Sari Ribbon in the Black Cherry color from Joggles. I used my magnetic ruler from Glassboard Studio to help hold the card to my glass mat while I tied the knot in the ribbon.
Decorating the Inside of the Card
For the inside of the card, I cut a panel of Neenah Solar White 80lb. cardstock, and a mat layer from Scrapbook.com‘s Holographic Mirror Paper. I stamped the sentiment from Gina K Designs Fancy Phrases stamp set in Turquoise Sea ink, and used a 49 and Market Viken rub-on to the left of the sentiment. I added the two layers together and then used my tape runner to adhere the panels to the card base.
Envelope for Butterfly Card
I made a coordinating purple shimmer A2-sized envelope for this card using the 1-2-3 Punch Board from We R Memory Keepers, Paper Accents Rainbow Pearl Cardstock, and Paper Wishes Gold Pearl Butterfly stickers. To protect the card front, I cut a piece of the holographic paper to A2 size, and ran it through the Lisa Horton Crafts Celebration Sentiments Embossing Folder. This helps protect the card front when inserting the card into the envelope, and during mailing.
