Color-change Birthday Card using Lisa Horton Crafts Interference Inks

For today’s project, I made a cool color-changing Birthday card using Altenew Jet Black Ink and Lisa Horton Crafts Regal Grey Interference Ink, along with the Simon Says Stamp Demilune Embossing Folder. For the sentiment, I used the new Gina K Designs Modern Greetings Stamp and Die Set from the Spring Things Card Kit.

For the inside panel, I used a sentiment from the Simon Says Stamp Good Greetings 1 Stamp Set. All rectangles on the card were die cut using the Papertrey Ink Rounded Rectangles: Stitched Die Set.

The card base was made from Altenew Pure Graphite cardstock, and the sentiment and inside panel were cut from Simon Says Stamp Heavyweight White Cardstock. All products used in today’s card tutorial project are listed below.

I have a recent unboxing tour for the new Gina K Designs Spring Things Card Kit I used in today’s project, which includes the Modern Greetings Stamp and Die Set. This walkthrough has a blog post and video available.

Creating the Color-change Background Panel

For this card, I cut a background panel from Simon Says Stamp Heavyweight White cardstock using the Papertrey Ink Rounded Rectangles: Stitched Die Set, and embossed it using the Simon Says Stamp Demilune Embossing Folder.

Next, I used an Altenew Jet Black ink pad and rubbed it over the top of the embossed card panel. The black ink pad is made of felt and only hits the high points in the embossed image. Once that was complete, I rubbed over the panel with the Lisa Horton Crafts Regal Grey Interference Ink. This ink pad is made of foam, and the ink can go further down into the embossed image.

Interference ink pads are amazing because there are two color values in each ink pad. The color on the left of the ink pad cover is what appears on white or light-colored cardstock. The color on the right of the ink pad cover is what appears on black or dark-colored cardstock. If you want to have both color values show on the same project, first applying black ink partially to the image will allow for both color values to show. Conversely, you can add white pigment ink to black cardstock before applying the Interference Ink to also get both values.

Creating the Sentiment

For the sentiment, I used my Misti Stamping Tool to create the two-step sentiment from the Gina K Designs Modern Greetings set. First, I stamped the Birthday stamp onto a scrap piece of paper, and placed the die-cut negative piece over the image as a template to line up the sentiment correctly. I put the die cut into the template, then stamped the Birthday onto it using the Regal Grey Interference Ink. I used my Ranger Heat-it Tool to dry the ink before moving on to the second step.

For the Wishes stamp, I used the same template method to line up the stamp on the die cut properly. I first stamped the Wishes in black ink, and then stamped again in the Regal Grey to get both color values on the sentiment.

Creating the Sentiment Sandwich

I cut out three extra sentiment die cuts from white cardstock, and added two of them together with glue. Then, I adhered the stamped sentiment on top of the last die cut. I cut out a panel of Simon Says Stamp Vellum using a Papertrey Ink stitched rectangle, and added the sentiment stack to the front using glue.

Next, I adhered the blank die cut stack to the back of the vellum using liquid glue, being careful to line up the die cuts directly behind the die cuts on the front of the vellum so they would not show through the vellum. This method is a great way to add some height to the sentiment, while making it easier to hide the glue on the vellum. I added glue to the back of the die cuts and adhered the sentiment panel to the embossed panel. I placed an acrylic block on top of the sentiment while it was drying to help it adhere to the panel.

Finishing Card Front, Inside of Card

I added the embossed panel to a card base cut from Altenew Pure Graphite cardstock. I rounded the edges of the card base to coordinate with the embossed panel.

For the inside of the card, I die cut a panel from white cardstock using the Papertrey Ink Stitched Rectangles. Then, I stamped a sentiment from the Simon Says Stamp Good Greetings 1 Stamp Set with the Regal Grey ink. I stamped the heart in black ink first, then again with Regal Grey.

I attached the stamped and panel inside the card base using temporary adhesive. I find this is easier for me, so I can remove and replace the panel if I mess up when writing my message without having to tear my card apart.
