Step-by-Step Guide to Easy Quilt Cards: Christmas and Thankful
In this video project, I made a quilt square Christmas card using a very easy process. I had never made a quilt card before as it always seemed too fiddly and complicated. This method is so easy and turned out great! I used the Paper Wishes/Hot Off the Press Christmas Plaid Florals Collection for the paper strips, sentiment, and matting layers. At the end of the video, I showed a Thankful card I had made using the Spellbinders Rosie’s Studio Bayfair Collection. All products used in making this project are listed below.

Product Information
I cut the quilt paper strips from the Paper Wishes Christmas Floral Plaids 6 x 6″ paper pack. The mat layers are from the Solids Paper Pack, and the sentiment is from the die-cut pack. The large square, small squares, and card base were cut from Simon Says Stamp Ivory cardstock.
I have an walkthrough video of the Christmas Floral Plaids collection if you want to see all of the included products, and a card tutorial and blog post where I used the collection to create Christmas and Holiday cards using the September 2025 Sheetload of Cards Sketch.

How to Weave the Paper Strips
The first step is to draw pencil lines on the 3 x 3″ square piece, diagonal to diagonal, to make an “X” on the square.

Next, add glue on the top left upper half only, along the pencil line. Add the first strip of patterned over the glue, and line up with the pencil line. Add glue to the bottom right section only, near the pencil line. Add the 2nd strip of paper on top of the glue, and butt the two strips up together tightly.

Once the first two strips are adhered, it is time to weave in the remaining pieces. The 3rd strip goes over the glued down part of left strip, and under the not-glued down part of the right strip. Add glue underneath the strip and line up with the pencil line. Repeat the process, but opposite, with the 4th strip, then glue down all the remaining ends of the paper strips. This will leave you with a woven area in the center of the square.

Once all of the paper strips were glued down, I cut off the excess using my Tim Holtz Guillotine trimmer to get a nice straight edge.
Creating the Quilted Look
This best part about this technique is that you don’t have to worry about cutting angles on the ends of the paper strips! Adding the small squares to the corners of the larger square creates an optical illusion of angled strips.

After the small squares were added to the larger square, I embossed the quilt square using the Gina K Designs Gingham Embossing Folder. This added a nice dimensional texture to the quilt square.
Building the Card Front
I added the quilt square to the mat square layer, and then placed it on the card front to help me with the placement of the ivory ribbon from Paper Wishes. I used double-sided tape to adhere the ribbon to the card front panel. After that was adhered, I used my tape runner to add the panel to the mat layer, then added it to the card base.

Next, I added the quilt square towards the top of the background panel. For the die-cut sentiment piece, I cut a mat for it and added Simon Says Stamp Big Momma Foam Tape behind the layers to pop it up. Then I placed the sentiment over the ribbon and the card front was complete!

Inside of the Card
For the inside of the card, I cut a panel from the Simon Says Stamp Ivory Cardstock, and a mat layer from the Paper Wishes Christmas Floral Plaids Solid Paper Pack. Next I added a wide strip of the Christmas Floral Plaids along the left side of the panel. I will stamp a sentiment inside when I get ready to send the card off.

Bonus Quilt Card: Thankful Card
For the second card, I cut the large square, small squares, and the card base from Spellbinders Classic White Cardstock. The paper strips, square mat, and inside skinny strip were cut from Spellbinders Rosie’s Studio Bayfair Scrapbook Collection.

I used the die-cuts from the collection to add a collage to the front of the card, and added a banner die-cut on top of the patterned paper strip on the inside of the card. The mat layer for the front panel was cut from Spellbinders Celestial cardstock. I embossed the quilt square using the Concord & 9th Charming Embossing Folder.
