How to Craft a Whimsical Card with the Starry Holiday Collection

In this video project, I made a Winter Holiday card using products from the new Dina Wakley Starry Holiday Collection. Spellbinders sent me a couple of products from this collection to have a play with, and they are the Merry Merry Merry Bird BetterPress Registration plates, and the Stars and Fronds Embossing Folder. All products used in making this project are listed below.

Measurements
4 1/4 x 4 1/4" Card Base, when folded
8 1/2 x 4 1/4", Scored at 4 1/4"

Postage Square: 3 1/2 x 3 1/2"
Mat Layer: 4 x 4"

Inside Panel: 3 3/4 x 3 3/4"
Mat Layer: 4 x 4"

Using Spellbinders BetterPress Plates for Holiday Cards

For the focal images on this card, I die cut the shapes first from Spellbinders Classic White cardstock, and then used my BetterPress Machine to press the images and sentiment into the die cuts. To do this easily, I used my upside-down BetterPress hack. You can check out this hack, as well as a few others, in my blog post and video. I used BetterPress Azure ink for the letterpressing, which is from the Tropical Ink Pad Collection 4-pack.

Creating the Background Pieces

I cut out a square, and postage mat layer, from the Spellbinders Postage Edge Squares die set. I embossed the square using the Stars and Fronds Embossing Folder. Next I added a combination of the Spellbinders Azure Ink, and Lisa Horton Crafts Colour Shift Ink in Under the Sea, to my glass mat from Glassboard Studio.

In order to make the Azure ink move, I sprayed isopropyl alcohol on the ink because it is solvent-based, and then did the ink smooshing technique where I dipped and smooshed the postage panel into the two inks. I dried the panel using my Ranger Heat-it tool, and then added more of the Under the Sea ink to my glass mat. I added water to the ink to get it to move, ink smooshed the panel again, and then dried it. Layering the inks and drying in-between each layer gives lots of depth and dimension to the background.

The shimmer properties of the Colour Shift ink are visible where the ink pooled up on the paper. For more info on the Colour Shift Inks, including ink swatches, check out my blog post and video.

Putting the Card Together

I used double-sided adhesive tape on the back of the inked panel to attach it to the card base, since it was a little warped from the ink smooshing. I also used double-sided tape to add the embossed panel on top of the ink-smooshed panel.

Once the background was assembled on the card base, it was time to add the focal images. I used Altenew Foam tape in varying widths and lofts to add the ornament down first, and then the bird image overlapping that. Then I added the sentiment towards the top of the card front.

Decorating the Inside of the Card

For the inside of the card, I cut a square panel of Spellbinder Classic White cardstock and used one of the snow-looking BetterPress plates from the Merry Merry Merry Bird set with Lisa Horton Craft Silver Shine Metallic Ink. I cut a square mat layer from the Spellbinders Windy cardstock, and added both pieces inside the card using my tape runner.
