Create a Fun Graduation Card with Concord & 9th
In this video project, I made a fun pop-up Graduation card using the Concord & 9th Burst of Cheer stamps and dies, Pop-up Burst Base Dies, and the Bursting Backgrounds Turnabout Stencil. I used the Echo Park Graduation Pack, Gina K Designs Black Onyx Cardstock, and Tonic Studios Welsh Gold Glitter and Honey Gold Satin Cardstocks for the paper on the card. All products used are listed below.
Measurements:
A2 Card Base: 4 1/4 x 5 1/2" when folded
8 1/2 x 5 1/2", Scored at 4 1/4"
Cut-apart: 3 x 4"
Mat 3 1/4 x 4 1/4"
Front Panel: 4 x 5 1/4"
Inside panels (2): 4 1/8 x 5 3/8"
Back Panel: 4 x 3 1/2"
Graduation Card Paper Pieces
For this card, I cut an A2 Card Base, and pieces from the Concord & 9th Pop-up Burst Base Dies, out of Gina K Designs Black Onyx cardstock. For the front of the card, I cut out one of the cut-aparts from the paper pack and a trimmed a Black Onyx mat to go behind it. I also cut a panel from the patterned paper to go behind the focal image. I cut out two panels of patterned paper from the Echo Park Graduation Collection Paper Pack for the inside of the card, making sure I cut them to appear as a continuous image.
Next, I cut out the ‘Hooray’ sentiment from the Concord and 9th Burst of Cheer Die Set with the Welsh Gold Glitter paper. I also cut out stars from the same set in the Welsh Gold, and also the Tonic Studios Honey Gold Satin cardstock. Before die cutting, I used Altenew double-sided adhesive sheets on the back of the papers to turn them into stickers (and avoid getting liquid adhesive on the satin cardstock when applying the stars later).
Cutting the Hooray and Star Pegs
I used a double-sided adhesive sheet between some white cardstock and a piece of patterned paper so the Hooray pegs would have more stand-up strength inside the card. I cut the star pegs from Simon Says Stamp Acetate sheets, and added the glitter and satin star stickers to the tops of the pegs. I added the glitter Hooray letter stickers to the tops of the Hooray pegs, making sure to note on the back of the O’s which one was the first O and which one was the second O. The O’s need to be in the correct order when placing on the base for proper fit.
Creating the Pop-up Mechanism
I wanted to decorate the pop-up mechanism, so I used the Concord & 9th Bursting Background Turnabout Stencil Set with Lisa Horton Crafts Titanium, Copper Pot, Silver Shine, and Fool’s Gold Metallic Inks. I stenciled both sides of the mechanism as when you build it, you fold it back on itself, and both sides are visible. These inks show up fabulously on dark cardstock and added a festive touch to the pop-up mechanism. See the video for more tips on how to use a turnabout stencil.
Building the Pieces
I stamped the banner piece with the Let’s Celebrate sentiment from the Burst of Cheer Stamp Set with the Fool’s Gold ink, and dried it with my Ranger Heat-it tool. I folded all the score lines on the mechanism, banner, and supports, using my bone folder to reinforce the folds. Using a Fine Tip glue bottle from Gina K Designs, I built and glued the supports and the banner, and added the Hooray pegs to the front of the mechanism. I used the teeter-totter template to mark off the proper placement for the mechanism and banner inside the card. After finishing building the mechanism, I added it to the card base using glue.
Having a day…
After many attempts and much frustration in adding the mechanism to the card with glue, I changed over to using 1/4″ Red Line Tape as my adhesive. This worked out so much better and I was able to finally add and secure the mechanism inside the card properly. I also added the banner inside the card using the Red Line tape.
Finishing up the card
I added the star pegs to the inside of the mechanism using 1/8″ Red Line tape, and added additional star stickers around the card background. Using the Silver Dazzle Jewel Stickers from Paper Wishes, I added a few embellishments to the front of the card to add a little sparkle. I cut a piece of Accent Opaque white cardstock and added it to the back of the card for a place to write a message. I then added additional stars on the panel to finish up this card. This would be a super-fun card to receive to celebrate a Graduation!
